that if I have a problem it is with the internal wiring- for which they charge 100+ dollars if I request them to fix it. What can I do? I open up the outside box, but it seems to be connected to one of the 5 lines available for the house- what is the economic and easiest fix to this? Thanks to all answerers.

if you recently moved to a new place, then find out who had the place before you and ask either them or the landlord or the realtor how they connected their phone and made it work.

Sounds like something the phone company typically would say (to get money).

But seems to me there must be at least one outlet that's working where you could plug in the phone. Or, maybe the former owner or renter used a computer and had it rewired so that all calls come thru their computer (so they didn't have a specific phone outlet). You need to ask some questions.

When you say the "company says they connected service to the outside bos" usually they mean they just turned on a switch at their office that made your phone work. If it is "new" service that has never been at the place where you live then maybe there is some connections inside that are missing. You need to ask a lot of questions and try a lot of things before you can understand what's going on here and get it resolved.

Depending on how old and the layout of your house. Internal phone wire is fairly easy to replace as you just string new stuff - hoping that you can get to all the runs.

Have you plugged your phone into all the different outlets and checked from each one if the phone works? If it's from just one, odds are it's the internal wiring to that outlet. Or even just a loose wire.

Also, check to make sure the wires haven't come disconnected from the outlets in back. Have you checked to make sure that the wires weren't cut and that the outlets are still connected to the system?

Tell your landlord about it. Maybe he knows something. Reguardless if there's a problem with the house wiring it should be something he'd at least take off the rent for you to take care of. Call around for quotes from eletricians besides the phone company to look at it. If they determine that they phone company screwed up, call and complain that you had to get an electrician and you should be compensated.

I had a similar situation with my phone when i switched to MCI. Somehow when they hooked up my service my lines got crossed and i was picking up other peoples conversations. I refused to pay the $100 fee for them to come out and fix their mistake so I switched to a different phone company. Once I switched everything worked out okay.

If you are renting your landlord will have to pay for the repairs, so maybe keep that as an option if that is the case.
