When somebody drops a player, he is placed on waivers.
You can add that player to your team, but will only get him if you are higher on the waiver wire than somebody else who wants him. If you are #1, you are guaranteed to get that player. If you don't claim him, it goes to #2 and so on. Players on waivers will be added to the free agent pool if nobody claims him. Once you claim somebody, you drop to the end of the list, and everybody moves up one spot.
If it is an average player, and you think nobody is going to claim him, wait till he gets into the free agent pool before picking him up. This way you don't drop to the end of the list of waivers. #1 is a good spot, wait till somebody drops a good player that everybody wants before using it.

it means if a guy gets released in the free agent pool he stays there for 2 days (he is on waivers)..in those two days 5 guys in the league could try to pick him up..but after the 2 days, u will get him since ur #1 on waivers..just like #3 would get a player before #8 will..and after u claim a guy off waivers, u go to the end of the list

waivers vary in leagues - basically, you have first choice in the free agents for this week - at least for a period of time (sometimes 2 days, but varies) - once the designated waiver period passes, it's first-come-first-serve.

so the first person you claim right now is yours when the waiver period expires. If someone else also claimed him, they are SOL.
