The producer is like the managing director. Each TV production is like a business - it has a budget and the management team have to make decisions on how that's spent, and how they can ensure that they get sufficient viewers to maintain or increase their audience and therefore budget. So the producer makes the decisions about what's in the show, who's hired/fired, etc. Most TV productions nowadays have a production team, rather than a single person, but the principle is the same.

He/she puts together the team that makes the show happen.

They would have to get funding for the project (not usually their own money) - or on a network or BBC would have to convince a "commissioning editor" to buy the show.
Then they hire the director and usually the principal actors too.
Then they manage the whole project - make sure studios (or outdoor filming permits) are available, make sure there's a camera crew, costumes and catering, etc etc... and then massage the egos of the fragile talents.

But then when the show wins an award, they get to go up on stage and wave to their mums, so it's worth it :-)

Actually I believe there are 2 kinds of producers 1. The $$$$ producer who provide the funds and direction for the project to go
especially in entertainment. 2. The actual put it together producer who cuts and splices and add sound FX etc. to pieces of the project to make it whole. Commercials, promos, etc.

I heard that too. I heard Jamie Lynn's mom is paying this 18 year previous boyfriend to declare that he's the father. This lots older guy is 34 and he's an govt on Jamie Lynn's Nickelodeon teach Zoey one 0 one. They reported Jamie Lynn went to him as a mentor whilst each and all of the craziness began in her relatives and he in basic terms took income of her. Granted it somewhat is all gossip from t.v. and magazines, yet I even have considered some outrageous thoughts that became out to be actual. guess we are going to easily might desire to anticipate Jamie Lynn to bypass on Maury and discover out who the father is.
