People that setup and use wireless access to their private internet connections (a wired line that they pay for) do not always lock down the security features of their wireless network. As you note, it you are in range of such a network, you may be able to easily access it. I am not sure if it is really stealing, it is more like a failure to secure a personal resource.

As an example, if my neighbor left their hose running on the public walkway, and I walked by, picked it up and took a drink, I suppose I would be technically stealing the water...but in a way, the neighbor was giving it away too.

To your point, just turn on your machine and wireless access. Go to Control panel->network and right click the wireless network and select properties. SOme machines have a wireless on the control panel.
There you should see all networks that are broadcasting. Try any of them. If they are unsecured and open, you are in. Open the browser and test it.
Obviously, you need to have a wireless access card in your computer, some are built in, some plug into PCMCIA ports or USB. Select one that is 802.11g but is capable of running 802.11b (an older slower access that is commonly still used).

HOWEVER, most people know to lock their wireless systems now. IF the wireless point has a WEP access code, you will need t know it to access. Almost impossible to crack. Many systems do not broadcast a network ID which means they can't be accessed without that. Besides this, most 802.11b or 802.11g systems are limited to a short range, about the same as an indoor wireless phone set.

To those that want to lock their systems to such unauthorized wireless use, set the access point to NOT broadcast the Network ID, and USE WEP ENCRYPTION. Then only your systems that are setup this way can be used. EVeryone else is locked out.

A few things first:

1. Most wireless networks are secure, meaning they require a key to access them. You probably won't be able to pick up ANY signals anyways.
2. Chances are you will NOT be able to pick up any unsecured signals, unless you know for a fact that your neighbor has an unsecure network or someone nearby has one.
3. Probably illegal?

If you still want to try, you're going to need a Wireless PCI Adapter, and if you have Windows XP, it will automatically detect wireless networks. If you don't know how to install hardware, e.g. the PCI card, ask Best Buy or similar retailer to do it (for a fee, of course).

If you dont have a wireless converter installed into your computer you need to find out the wireless converter that will fit for most colleges its a 802.11B card that is needed for the wireless conection. But, if your computer is already installed with one then you can just take it to a place with wireless internet and you'll pick it up.

All you need is a wireless card. There are basically two types: those that you install and those that you plug into a usb port. Assuming you have a free usb port on your computer this second option is probably easier. You can buy a wireless card just about anywhere (e.g., circuit city, office depot, wallmart), expect to pay about $30.00 US.

I would suggest going down to a Best Buy or other computer sales store. The go to the computer section and start looking at the different wireless systems. I chose Netgear. After you choose the wireless system choose the length you want it to span. We chose 100 ft.The further the span the more expensive and the better your chance of connectivity. I have an e machines computer and there is nothing special you have to do to hook it up just follow the instructions and install the disk.

Depends on if the "available wireless connection in my area" is designated and intended to be free - or the owner just did not secure it correctly. Otherwise, you can be gulity of things such as "theft of computer services." The owner of the "available wireless connection in my area" is probably in breach if their ISP's agreement regarding extending access beyond intended usage point (ie - their house). You should find the source and get permission.

Add in a wireless card and see what it picks up when it searches for wireless networks.

you need a wireless adapter, but keep in mind stealing internet service without the person knowing it is illegal and in some states considered criminal. I know in Ohio a recent case the person stealing the internet was fined $250 for the 1st offense.

Yes you can, provided that someone in an apartment fairly close to you has it, you should pick up a network adapter card (plugs in to your former modem slot), you can hook up in about ten seconds to attempt to pick up a signal. Get the one with the largest range available. Buy the brand Lynksys (as I beleive that is the most common one, and it is easier to pick up the signal from someone elses router if the brands match up). Just be sure to save the packaging and the receipt if you are not able to pick up a signal, so at least you can get a refund.

Insted of doing any illegal. What don't you ask the college if they provide free wireless internet service. Some do. They can even help you set it up if needed.
