Why is everyone so obsessed by race? Can't people talk about anything else but sex, and racial matters?

It is important because people are too stupid or afraid to befriend someone who doesn't look exactly like them. They shy away from blacks or whites or asians or hispanics because they don't know them, don't know their culture, don't know anything about them and that makes them afraid. People are always afraid of what they do not know. Now once you have that fear, then hate becomes the next step. Its exactly what the government and others are trying to do by stirring up all this fear over Muslims. As long as we're afraid, they can do the things they want. I'm not asking for world peace, that's an unachievable goal, but a little bit of discussion and some open-mindedness and we could definitely make progress. And for God's sake people need to quit living in the past!

Maybe because of the huge diversity of this country. I think sometimes people get scared of the diversity, like it will make their own culture disappear. While being scared they struggle to hold on to their own culture. I guess that race and ethnicity is important to some because it' a part of who they are. I personally think that there's no reason to be scared, but instead I wish we could share amongst different cultures.(a learning experience)

In my opinion, fighting about race and ethnicity is actually encouraged by the government and other people who benefit by it.
If the people are fighting with each other, they aren't watching what their elected officials are doing. It's the same thing as the dumbing down of Americans. Stupid people are easier to control.
How much wealth would people like Jesse Jackson have if there weren't any racial problems? I'm not saying he's the only one who benefits by keeping the racial pot stirred, but he is the first one that comes to my mind.

Because everyone in America is from a different country (unless you are Native American). Like me, my heritage is French/Norwegan. It is so important because the media inflates everything, every day "Americans" don't think that way - it's just the news. Don't believe every thing you read, hear, see...

It isn't to the average person, but to the politicians it's a goldmine of votes by keeping these subjects in the forefront. The media tends to keep these issues 'alive and well' also. It's a shame that people just can't be 'people'. :(
