Tomato plants are members of the night shade family. It was just mentioned on the Martha Stewart program today 8/21. Now I understand why I too get itchy after picking tomatoes. From now on I plan to wear gloves and long sleeved shirt.

It probably has something to do with individual skin types. It seems that almost any plant can cause irritation, some more than others. It is most likely a defense mechanism...
