Yes, u can, a electric fan is set when the engine reaches a certain temperature it will turn on pulling air through the radiator to cool the coolant, thus, cool the engine.. when driving normal highway speeds, there is enough air passing through the radiator where the fan is not needed. In stop and go driving, it will turn on and off as needed except when the A/C is turned on, then it runs all the time to keep not only the coolant cool but to cool the freon in the condenser. The electric fan is something that auto makers started putting on cars years ago to help reduce drag from a engine to increase gas mileage.

Electric Fans For Cars

When the engine is cold, the fan will not turn, as the engine warms up the fan should switch itself on to cool the water in the radiator / engine block. Sometimes if you are traveling at speed, enough air is being pushed through the radiator by the forward motion of the car, so it may indeed stop. However a fan that does not come on at all = siezed engine.

Will it still start and run down the road? Sure. Will it overheat and warp your aluminum heads, causing a very high repair bill? You bet it will, especially if you leave it idling at a red light.

Temporary fix to perhaps get it in to have the sensor replaced...assuming it is the sensor and not the fan motor. Take a piece of wire, attach one end to the positive battery post, and the other to the hot wire of the fan motor. Does it come on? Good, now it won't overheat and you can drive it to the mechanic to get the sensor replaced. Doesn't come on? It's the fan motor, call for the tow truck.

I'm assuming your radiator fan is not working at all.

Yes, but keep your eye of your temperature gauge. If it get cloose to the red zone, it is time to stop and turn off the engine.

Also you can gain a bit of cooling to the engine by running your heater on hot with full fan. But keep the air conditioning and other electrics off.

It depends. Do you live north of the Ar tic circle? Seriously, if you do you run a real risk of locking up your engine, then you not only get to replace the fan motor but also the entire engine. There is one more case. If you are driving at highway speeds, the fan turns off anyway. That's why it is electrical so it can be turned off. In town, don't do it.

Depending on the temperature. If you are moving about 30mph or faster and not using the ac and providing everything else is in good working condition. Sitting in traffic will increase the temperature. If you must use your heater blower setting inside the car on high to help cool off the engine. I rarely use mine since I have had to use a toggle switch to control the temperature/fan but it isn't a very good idea. You should get this fixed asap.

Yes and no. Depending on the vehicle, electric fans do not start until either the a/c is turned on or the vehicle reaches its optimum temperature. The motor needs to reach its ideal temperature in order to run efficiently. If the electric fan does not start, either the motor is not reaching it's correct temperature or you are in danger of overheating the engine.

you can but it will over heat after a few minutes if the car is not moving or is stop and go. Driving on the highway may be alright because it would keep air blowing through the radiator.
