I don't know her very well. She is a daughter of a childhood friend. Would like to spend less than $20.00

A great gift is a nice stylized diary with a lock and some good gel pens. If you can get her to record her thoughts now it will be valuable to her later. Someone did that for me and now I love looking back at things I thought were great ideas when I was between the ages of 8-16. lol. Plus she'll really enjoy the idea of it having a lock so she can have some privacy

Enjoy yourself as you search out the perfect gift for that special eight-year-old girl in your life.

Steps:

1. Consider her interests: Does she like baseball? Ballet? Books? Search out something that will help her develop her passions.

2. Indulge your inner child: Browse a toy store, real or online, and find something that you think might please her: A kid's magnetic poetry kit? Inflatable pool toys? Electronic memory games?

3. Go for an old favorite like Twister or a cool, new hi-tech watch.

4. Talk to her parents if you're at a loss. They'll know best what's likely to make her happy - and they'll also know what she already has.

5. Take her out to the movies or a children's museum. You'll get a one-on-one visit, and her parents will have a lightened parenting load.

6. Give a gift certificate and she'll be able to choose her own present.

7. Look to the future: Buy a bond for her education fund.

Tips:
Avoid adding to that stack of unused items in the garage - make sure whatever you get is returnable

An American Girl brand doll is a wonderful gift at that age-my daughter who just turned 9 got hers for Christmas and she loves it. It looks just like her and she is saving her money now to buy accessories for it and treats it very responsibly-like her own little child. A savings bond is also a great gift-they may not think so at this age but when grown it will mean alot. Good luck!

It depends on how well you know the child--if it's your kid, she may be old enough to start with something like the American Girl Dolls--it teaches them history and passion for reading (there are stories attached), and also provides for future gifting--accessories for the dolls, books, etc. If it's not your child, perhaps a gift card or cash will teach them to budget their money--they really want that $15 barbie doll (I'm 22, I don't know what these things cost nowadays), but they've only got $10...do they save it or spend it on something else? Just a thought.

Define your budget. Anything can be a good gift, depending on the needs of the girl. Some would like toys, some would like girly things. I think bringing her to Disneyland will be the greatest gift of all.

Start a savings account for her. My aunt did this for me and it really grew as I got older. Never a bad idea. If you must get a toy, the child may love a Battat Horse by the American Girl Doll Company. It's a large 20" horse. I found one recently at an estate sale and thought to myself that I would have loved this as a child. (If she likes horses of course). You can get one online or on eBay.

8 year old girls have learned to write and like to expand their skill. A pretty journal in which they can write and draw pictures along with watercolor markers and a pen is a nice gift. Throw in an animal shaped backpack or brightly colored tote in which to hold it all and you become a favorite gift giver.
