the knowledge of some of the commands are invaluable, for instance: you crash winxp, you pop in the cd and boot recovery co nsole, now you get a lovely command prompt, what do you do? Why you type in a command! chkdsk , fixmbr, fixboot....etc. command prompt is very important when your pretty gui wont start, and you need access to the file system or system checkers

You don't need to know them for XP or the upcoming Vista. But if you run 98 or ME, it can come in handy when you machine crashes.
