i have a 99 pontiac grand am that wont start. when i turn the key to acc everything is working(lights, radio, etc) but when i turn it to the start position, everything goes dead. if i open the door and slam it shut everything comes back on but the car wont start. what is wrong with my car?

Sounds more like an open in your ignition rather than a short. If you can get to the wires on the switch, make sure everything is plugged in tight (you may have to remove panels to get to it) and also check of a loose ignition fuse. If slamming the door does it, try to isolate an area. Tap the steering wheel and see if you get power. If so, ignition switch. Tap near the fuse box. Give the dash a pound...good luck on finding it. Might be easier in the long run to call your mechanic and have him send out the tow truck.

its got a bad connection somewhere,or a bad ground wire i own a repair shop,,and my service truck did this once,,it was the negative cable on it,,it was loosing ground,,it would do everything but start and run,,i hope this help.s.

it could be your battery, or have a bad starting circuit. Check the body and chassis grounds.

You probably need a new ignition switch

ck batt cables, then jump it with another car that will tell you if its low voltage problem .
