The politicians continually vote themselves raises but won't raise minimum wage.
The politicians and their families recieve free health care, the very best there is, but millions go without any healthcare at all in this country.
People on social security are told there might not be enough money down the road, but we send billions of money to other countries.
The president is saying on TV right now that millions will be sent to the middle east to build what never even existed before, yet there are millions homeless and without jobs right here.

Sorry caylinn you are wrong about help being available to everyone in this country. Four years ago I found out I had cancer the same week the company I worked for went bankrupt. Because I had no dependents, I was ineligible for any kind of help except $38.00 per month for food stamps. I had no resources such as my own home or savings accounts. I still was ineligible. So please don't assume that by filling out the correct forms you are automatically given help because that is totally false. Been there, done that...

You're damn right. Stupid Bush doesn't give a **** about Iraqis--he just wants the oil reserves. Unfortunately most people here are too absorbed in other matters t orealize that we need work in this country and just go along with stupid Bush and the stupid American pride. They think that the U.S. has every right to go bully other countries, but I guess most people are just really ignorant and don't really care either. They have no idea about the 9 trillion deficit; they don't even know what deficit means. As long as they get those 600 bucks in tax returns, they're happy. Idiots!

The US has plenty of social programs in place to help those who need it. However, those who need it actually have to take the time to go to the correct office, fill out the paperwork, and then follow up. Nothing annoys me more than when people complain about what we don't have here in the US. We have whatever anyone needs, as long as the one in need can be bothered to go through the rigamarole to get it. Is it a pain in the butt? Sure. But if you're going to ask for free food, healthcare, job training, employment services, child care, rent, etc, you better be willing to do what's necessary, otherwise don't even bother to complain.
Also, if you really need that type of help, do some research on what's available in your area. Every city has access to a DCFS office, even it's a satellite or portable one. Make an appointment and get help. If you're not going to be part of your own solution, then stop whining.
Keeping all of this in mind, there are countries without the social structure in place to do this for their citizens. We already have it. Why not help those who don't?

We spend enormous amounts of money overseas showing the World how good we are. Of course that hasn't worked yet.
Internally there has to be a restructure of our beliefs if there is to be a change in our social culture. As we have seen from public housing, welfare, and other subsideries it can lead to mass under achievement in society. Though the social welfare initiatives do assist some when they are at low points others may choose to ever get above that system. If you look at cultures that promote socialism you will find overwhelming laziness amongst that society. We have a strong capitalist society that has social initiatives but it longs for some intelligent restructuring. Some of the people in the US don't want more than what they have

Malioloni speaks with such authority!! I wonder where his/her sources may be? The fact is, the United States IS generous with its money and does bail out those people in countries where there are natural disasters and famine. It is, however, evident that much also needs to be done here at home. If we isolate ourselves and our wealth from the rest of the world, we will, in effect, be encouraging disaster and more poverty. Thus we have to find a balance of where our money goes.

People mistakenly believe that the US is one of the most "generous" donors of foreign aid. Nothing could be further from the truth. As a percentage of GDP, the US is one of the stingiest countries on earth, giving less than 1% in foreign aid.
Having said that, I agree that it would be better to solve problems at home first. However, even if that money were not sent to foreign countries, it would also not be spent on the right causes here at home.

according to the OECD, in 2005, U.S. foreign aid amounted to 0.22% of U.S. National Income. That puts us behind 21 other members and ahead of only one, Portugal. So we don't look very generous, considering how rich we are as a nation.
I agree we should provide health care for all.
Also, a 'strategic redeployment' (i.e. retreat) in Iraq would save hundreds of billions of dollars, and thousands of lives.
