I'm 14 and I love to stretch and dance but all the stretching hurts my back and sometimes my legs. Is there anything I can do to help prevent this?

You might want to have a professional correct your posture and make sure you are doing the stretches correctly. If the pain is from over extending just don't go as far as you are trying to go. If the pain is happening because your muscles are sore from not being used try to start slowly and take a hot bath after stretching. However if the pain is happening because your doing the stretch incorrectly you will need to correct it before the pain will go away. Never go further then you should and never bounce into the stretch as theis can rip muscles and ligaments and cause serious pain and even permanet damge. Take all stretches as slowly as possible and only go to the point where you feel slight resistance not pain. As a mother, a dancer and a nurse I have to stick with the good ol' fashioned saying... "If it hurt, don't do it!"

Well it is great to strecth but i have this problem after every summer when dance season starts back up. I didn't stretch much over the summer, and i get to dance class and i assume that i can do it as good as i did last year. Well you have to start off small. Stretch a little more gentle, don't go as far as you normally do, just go far enough that you feel a small pull. Soon you will be right back up to where you were last year.

Unfortunately, you can't really prevent muscle aches. After working your muscles their hardest, try soaking in a hot bath or shower, or trying a commercial vibrator or heat pack. If you are only stretching once or twice a week, stretch every day. Your body will become used to it, and you won't get sore muscles as often. GOOD LUCK!!!

Stop stretching...maybe see a physical therapist. Maybe your stretching the wrong way and its hurting you instead of helping.

before you streach you need to lay down and ice your back for like 10 minutes!
