Someone else said this, but yea all the computers are pretty much coming from the same place so it really wont matter too much. But I work in retail and there are two that really stand out and if you picked one of them you'll be ok. First, Thinkpad(only problem is that IBM no longer makes them, also to get them under 800 you'll have to get them refurb, which is what I did and mine is still kicking). Secondly, HP, these will usually come with the Turion64 processor and that's just a really powerful processor, and lastly Toshiba. Just because it's last on my list doesnt mean it sucks, I just feel with the other two you'll get more for your money. Hope this helps.
EDIT:: I just read the last part of your post...if you want a 17" screen you'll have little to no luck finding one under $800::

Nowadays, computers are almost all about the same in the way of reliability. I would suggest finding out who has the best service contract and customer service(if it still exists anywhere in the US). Hardware will break no matter who makes it, how it gets fixed is what should be important.

All I know is, my fiance bought a Toshiba laptop and it broke multiple times and the service is HORRIBLE, so I would recommend anything but a toshiba.

You should be able to buy one for that price no problem with those specs or better.
You hear good and bad about every brand, so do your research and try and pick one (kinda like pin the tail on the donkey!)

Dell may be a poor choice until we see if they will survive this crises.
