Do you realize that the same people you want to protect live in your cities and maybe even on your own streets and want nothing more than to rip your heart out, & kill your children. Lets say everybody in America rides the President's @ss & gets him to do what you people want, what happens next:JEHOD death to America! The only reason you have the rite to speak out is because we protect our way of life, if we don't we will be exstinct! Do you really think because you defend them they would not hurt you or your family, are you that ignorant? Don't confuse your freedom to speak out for these people, that they will like you, THEY STILL HATE YOU AND WOULD DECAPITATE YOU IN A HEARTBEAT. I am not saying that alot of things are not wrong but no one really knows how to stop these people & I think there will be alot more blood shead on American soil before people wake up. They do not care about your empathy because they are after you too.The President doesn't know what to do either!!!

Now that I have everyones attention, what do you tell my aunt who's child died in the twin towers or my other aunt who lost a child in one of the planes, or my neighbors children who watched their mother go off to war, would you tell them the same. Believe me I am well aware that there is no solution to the problem, I live in a military town, we watch them come and go, sometimes I can not walk through the mall and cry because of all the young men who are willing to go and fight a useless war. I vote for who I want, I am not for or against either party. Lets see what the next guys solving skills are. I am just an American who's father went to war and taught me how to love my country, just as others love the countries they live in. Hey all you English teachers this is a forum not a classroom. Our whole country is confused, and once we turn on each other it is over. Glad to hear all your veiws and yes this question was asked to help you vent. Good therapy, peace to you all, love.

To start things off, I'm not an American.
If I were an American, neither the Republicans nor the Democrats would have anything to do with me.
I also apologize for the length of this answer in advance.
I believe that it is important to keep an open mind, to defend the freedoms that were won with so much blood, sweat and tears. Western democracy is by far the best system of government on this planet so far.
I also believe that you shouldn't open your mind so much that your brain falls out, that freedoms should be balanced with responsibility. I also believe that the cost of maintaining freedom is more blood, sweat and tears. While the western world has answered which political system is best, there are those that want to 'reopen' this epochal question and throw theocracy back as the dominate system.
Politics is that most fashionable intellectual pursuit, and the current political fashion is isolationism. Look at the calls to close borders, to restrict trade and concentrate on America's own issues. You can see this isolationism across political parties. As with all fashions, isolationism wanes and grows in cycles. One previous episode of isolationism was The Great Depression. America left the role of world leader to Britain, who answered the call when Germany invaded France.
Right now many Americans don't know that they are at war. One of the main reasons for why they don't know is that war is typically defined as two nations in conflict; and this isn't a conflict between states. George W. Bush didn't declare war, he accepted the call. It was another group that declared war on western society, and the USA as the de facto leader of western society. Any thing or one that does not support the restitution of the Caliphate is the enemy. Democracy is antithema to the Caliphate, as is the seperation of chuch and state, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly and freedom of speach.
In any 'low-intensity' conflict, a great guerilla force will use the enemies resources against their enemy. If you see a weakness, exploit it. Under a theocracy there is no need for rights, if the enemy is willing to grant you rights and priviledges you'll use those against your enemy. "Stay out of my religion, while I communicate my hatred to others in assembly. I have the right to do so, and the state may not regulate what I preach."
Should rights and freedoms be cancelled? Absolutely not. So what can be done? Find a balance such as has been done in the past for hate mongering (Freedom of Speach). Freedom of Speach was not cancelled, but in a free and democratic state there have been limits placed on speach to prevent harm to society. The freedom to extend your arm ends when it impacts your neighbour's nose. Can there be bi-partisan agreement as to what is a reasonable limit to hate? What about criminal sanction against those that wish to do us harm? What limits will we set on those tasked to defend us?
At this point, there are two, four-year cycles running in the states. This helps to lend a check and balance to power, but it also leads to short-term planning. The enemy for western society is planning over the long term; in the range of decades. What American's need to do is educate themselves to the true threat. Support reasoned measures against that threat, and yet maintain the rights and freedoms enjoyed in democracy.
America must engage the world in diplomacy, trade and security. You're the largest power in the world, you may not have asked for the responsibility, but you are the de facto world leader. Lead in a fair, yet firm manner. The public must educate themselves of the real threat and not what the political sound-bites state.

Why do you think that speaking out against the President means you are against our country?? If you believe that you have NO idea what it means to be an American. This is supposed to be a free democracy, not the Taliban. I'm former military and a lot of people have died to protect these freedoms. Bush is trying to run this country by FEAR and it's time we stand up and demand real change in fighting terrorism. We're spending billions of dollars in Iraq where we have no business being. What would all that $$$ mean to beefing up security here at home?? Think about what you're saying..............

Wow!!! What planet are you from? Are you sure you're not a member of some neo-nazi group? Talk about ignorant. Talk about being completely clueless.
I'm all for the U.S. If I weren't, I wouldn't have given 10 years of my life to defend it. My only problem is with the way Bush has handled things. His domestic policies are worse than useless. His foreign policies have blown up in his face. His war of pre-emption is now a precedent for any other coutry to use as a pretext for invasion. And for that, look no further than Somolia.
So please, go back to the kiddie table and let the adults handle it.

Because there has been a coup (election of 2000) and America is attempting to impose a Pax Americana on the world. I reject Empire and all those that support an Empire.
I don't "hate America first". I drink some coffee and smoke a cigarette, then I start hating America! (see source)

You paint a lovely picture, what with the bloodshed and decapitation and all.
You almost answer your own question here, but I hope that this helps. Many Americans, even those who voted for Bush, are disappointed with the state of our economy and our involvement in the Middle East. Sure, much of this could have been avoided and we could still be millions of dollars in surplus, as we were with President Clinton. But, people weren't happy with being ahead in the economy, or having a low unemployment rate, or maintaining a status of peace or keeping gas prices at a tolerable level or...I could go on and on.
You are correct when you finished with "The President doesn't know what to do either!!!"
But would it kill him to look back at our own people for a minute, then ask Clinton what he should do to help our own country?

I don't want to "protect" terrorists. I simply want to protect our personal liberty. I don't think that in the process of catching criminals we should have to sacrifice freedom. Many people say that "if you are doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide" I think that those people would be fine if we all lived in a police state. And, that really scares me.

Nobody is speaking out for terrorists, just against the way we are fighting them: militarily.
Law enforcement is the best way to deal with terrorism. Like it or not sending troops to invade a country and racking up the casualties is not going to do anything but create more terrorists.
And don't insult my intelligence by telling me that terrorists hate me. No Sh!t Sherlock! We are on the same side despite what
your talking point spinmeisters tell you.
