I've seen both movies, and have read the book numerous times. I'm a teacher, and it's my favorite read-aloud book. ANYWAY...I would have to say both movies have their points, but the Johnny Depp one is closer to the book. Some of the lines are direct quotes from the book. The Johnny Depp one has a darker humor, which is Roald Dahl's trademark. The Gene Wilder one was good but more campy. Both are worth it. Oh, and read the sequel..Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. That's just as fun!

I've enjoyed both movies...but frankly, I don't think that either movie version of the book was particularly faithful. But, I would also say that the changes made in the Gene Wilder version were CLOSER to the author's intent.
Tim Burton devoted WAAAAAAAY too much time to the pointless "back story" (Willy Wonka as a boy with his anti-sweets dentist father). Obviously, Roald Dahl didn't care a farthing (as the Brits might say) for WHY Willy was the way he was...he just WAS.
One of these days, perhaps someone will actually make a film of the book that Dahl wrote.

they were both good films. the gene wilder was closer to the book as far as storyline goes, but there really is much more in the book than either of the films managed to capture (as will usually happen when you make film of what the author first intended for a story).
of course in the johnny depp film you had that wonderful puppet introduction to the chocolate factory which makes fun of the 'duloc is the perfect place' sequence in 'shrek' (when that sequence was a parody to start with). sometimes a film can make up for not being able to do things you can do only in a novel by doing things you can do only in a film.
i'm glad i've seen both films - but i'm most glad of all that i've read the book (and most of roald dahl's other work). do you know any of his poetry, for example? it is very good.

I think the first one is most like the book. The new one is great, especially with my lover as Willy Wonka, but I think the old one shows more of what the book was like because the new one changed things. I love them both though.

I love the new Willie Wonka, but my daughter loves the old. It must be Johnny Depp. I think he is so handsome.

the new version is more like the book. It follow the story a little closer. Its a lot darker than the original version which is like the book. Key things were still missing, for instance, the oompa loompa's are infact aboriginee slaves but the movie never mentions that.

I've never read the book, but supposedly the second is more like the book. I personally like the older one better, because of the music. But I liked the new one also.
