Men are naturally gorgeous, women wear make up to make them lovely. When you think about it men are like lions - they have beards, they are similar to peacocks - they have eyes everywhere and as for the similarity with Mallard ducks, people tell me that Mallards will sh*g anything !

Read "The Red Queen".
Cultural freedom has allowed humans the value of song and dance, and they have placed the emphasis of child rearing upon human females.
The male has a choice of which female to procreate with, as does the human female. No other species has a concious choice of a mate.
On top of the basic traits that other animals look for, humans have an added seduction interest, intelligence.
So an extremely intelligent human can forego the standard mating ritual and use a tactical mind to influence the mind of a future mate. We call this "dating". Something no other species would waste any energy upon.
So to answer your question, humans never did switch. They decided that being attractive is an option. Humans always want to have options.

I don't believe that humans have switched - it's just different. In nature, females want to mate with the male that will either protect her the best (for species where the males hang around) and/or give her the healthiest offspring, so it's the males that must compete.
In humans, it's the same. Women go for the man with financial stability (able to provide) and/or strength (able to protect and provide healthy children). In general, men pursue the women.
Think of it this way, if a woman, ANY woman, wants to have sex, she can go to a bar somewhere and pick up a man. It probably won't be the man of her dreams, but any woman who wants a one-night-stand can have one seven days a week. A man does not have the same guarantee even if he is young, attractive, and has money to spend.

You're awesome, dude! ;) Well, like you said, in nature the females need to save themselves from predators when they're pregnant...but as humans, we don't have any predators to worry about, and since most men tend to be superficial beings, we females need to look more attractive to satisfy their hungry eyes.

We are at the top of the food chain! No need to protect ourselves. Plus one male can fertilize many women so it is the women that need to attract the male. It is really simple, humans are the most complex animal in the kingdom.

I don't know if that's necessarily true... society has changed so that women must be attractive at all times, lol, but still the best looking, most fit man gets the girl, most times. I think it's just that we are able to think on a different level is why things are the way they are.

We did NOT. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. You have to understand that what you think is ugly, someone else things is beautiful and vice versa. We all can achieve inner beauty if we strive for it, but not everyone cares to do so...and Only humans have the capacity to be beautiful in heart and mind...animals do not have that intellectual and emotional capacity.

Aren't we human males prettier than females? I thought we were. I must tell Miyuki this one. I suppose it's because our societies are safe from predators, and that often changes things radically. Jung noted that savages are very polite, for if one isn't, he's likely to be slain. In our "civilized" society, boors (e.g. my sister) insult anyone they please, and are safe from getting what they deserve. Survival of boors and prettier females are two results of our civilized societies.

Not all males are "prettier" than females, but it really depends on your frame of reference. How do we define what pretty is for other species? It may look pretty to us but our perceptions don't really count when it is their survival on the line.
