When I was a young man, in the '60s and '70s, winking was common. A wink could meat anything form Hello to Watch This to Flirting. I still do it, and sometimes I get a smile or a nod, but very often I get some really strange looks. I think it's kinda gone out of fashion, and a lot of people don't even know that it's a friendly gesture.
