My best friend on this planet is a woman I used to work with. We had a very close but intentionally nonsexual relationship. She is married. People at work were suspicious. But we decided that we knew the Truth and we were OK with rumors. So we have a wonderful friendship that has lasted over 15 years.

Because it's astronomically unlikely that your male coworker that you socialize with is your friend. It is not natural for an animal with a penis to have platonic relations with a potential sexual partner. Some would go so far as to say that it represents a defect in their sex drive of a straight man if they can be around an attractive woman and find them sexually unappealing. It is uncommon that a woman has an intimate connection with someone of her sexual preferrence that she's not involved with, especially if she's heterosexual. Your coworkers likely recognize this connection between you and your friend and make the logical conclusion that if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck that you're knocking boots with him. What's more, if more than one person at your work has noticed a pattern of behavior between you both that looks more like lovers than friends perhaps you should seriously evaluate why that is. It's entirely possible that they have a better perspective of how you're acting than you do.

I think ppl jump to conclusions like that because they think you can only be friends with members of the same sex so you can talk about the opposite sex. Or for the sheer fact that friends are regarded as someone you don't give much attention to. I mean they are there to hear your sob stories and to catch a movie with every now and again. But not to be doing things like hanging out and other stuff 24/7.

Work is boring. So ppl tend to find (or create) juicy ideas to entertain themselves. If it's not true, what do you care? Don't feed into their speculation by making big declarations and denials. Sooner or later, a new juicy bit of gossip will come along to entertain them.
But be careful. Maybe they see something in your behavior that is suggesting your feelings are more than just friendly to "Bob".

It's like a lightning strike. It finds the easiest route. Just like the neurons in their brains. Basically, they just can't help it.
Or it could be that, for them, jumping is much easier than thinking. (",)

I would just tell those people straight out that you guys are just friends, and if they can't except that than obviously they can't be friends w/ u. They're just jealous of ur friendship.
