I LIVE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, WHY DO I HAVE TO BE A FAN OF THE BOSTON TEAMS? LAST TIME I CHECKED BOSTON WAS IN MASSACHUSETTS, NOT NEW HAMPSHIRE

I agree that it's a silly expectation. Why should you have an attachment to a bunch of athletes based on nothing more than geography. I understand the argument about civic pride, but I don't think that holds true as much in an era where favorite players are switching teams every few years.

I grew up in Northern California and was surrounded by fans of the Giants, A's, 49ers and Raiders. These people all seemed to root for the teams I've mentioned simply because of geography. I now live in Southern California, and it's the exact same with the Angels and Dodgers. Personally, I've never been a fan of the local teams (except for a seven month "vacation" I took in Texas for the 1993 Rangers season), simply because it's boring to root for the local teams. I established my rooting interest based on what I was exposed to as a child, as well as the players that I followed us a kid -- to me those are much more legitimate way to choose your team -- it's lazy to only root for the locals...

I can't stand people like that. As a Floridian all the major influences in my life have been New Yorkers, I was raised on the Yanks and it pisses me off to no end to have some nimwit tell me I should root otherwise.

well you could like other New England Teams like the Yankees, The Pirates, Mets, Phillies, Orioles, Nationals, and maybe even the Toronto BLue Jays. You dont have to be a fan of your hometown it just you like who you like.

because it shows that you have pride in where you live... but no one says you have to like any team.
