I was going to say divorce him but you mean a real one, so yes, don't try to deal with it yourself. As the other poster says, you probably have more nearby in a nest so call your local Council's Pest Control Department. They deal with this kind of thing at little or no cost. If you have the misfortune not to be British, they may not, and you may have to call in a pest control firm.

Don't bother with cheese unless its a cartoon rat.
Use chocolate or a piece of meat and gravy, something with a strong meat scent.. Rats are omnivirous, and also have a sweet tooth.
You're right to be concerned, rats carry and transmit Weils disease; a serious form of hepatitis. They pee every few feet to leave a scent trail and its the urine that carries Weils. Clean up everywhere with a bleach based cleaner.

Well, one can put most any food on the trap.. Make sure it is a RAT trap instead of a mouse trap.. Are you sure it is a rat and not a MOUSE? If you have cheese, they like that best of course.

My grandmother put out peanut butter, and that seemed to work pretty well. Hope your rat problem goes away, and that you don't get too many self-righteous answerers telling you you're a terrible person for using a trap to get rid of the rat.

WHAT? , the rat is only one small poor creature if you want to get ridd of it you don't have to kill it, cause killing a life creature is a sin....You can get rid of rats by using a non poison trap and then when you catch the rat throw it outside your home/street!
And you can also take a cat it's not killing cause the cat will eat it...
Be aware if you kill a poor creature, you will suffer trust me!

set up traps along the walls at certain places in your house. Peanut butter is good to use. Just a little smudge of it on the trap, it has worked for me in the past.

Get rat pellets at the store. Rats love them and if the trap doesn't kill or trap them, the poison will do the trick. They are expert trap avoiders. Also, the pellets cause them to become very thirsty and they go outside in search of a fresh water source and will die outside instead of somewhere hidden in your home. No stinky dead rat mess to deal with. Good hunting! P.S. Get a cat.

If you have no other small pets, and small children, I recommend DECON which is a poison. Put it up high, where you find rat droppings, and low and behold, give it a day, and the rat will be history.
Or you can get a cat, that is what we did, and we have no Rats, No birds, No squirrels, No moths. LOL
