I am the only child at my home, and I have 3 younger siblings, but they unfortantly don't live with me. My mother does not approve of pets, but I really want a pet. I don't want a dog, I just want a hamster that is small and easy to take care of. I keep telling her that if I don't have a pet that I will grow up lonely. Plus all my friends either have pets or siblings in their house. Can you tell me what you think about me getting a hamster.

Like I say to my kids- My house, my rules. If your mom says no pets, that means no pets. Sorry!

Well, I don't know your whole situation, but I do feel that kids should have pets. But maybe your mom has good reasons. The only thing you can do is talk to her. Find out her reasons. She may not like rodents, and if ask about another pet, she may be more willing. Maybe she is worried you won't care for it. Maybe she is worried about the smell. Or she could be worried about the cost of caring for it!

You may want to try a different approach, and ask for a Betta or goldfish first. Both can be interesting pets, are easy care, and only take up a small space, and don't really smell bad. Once you show her how responsible you are, she may let you get another pet!

Don't try and pull the "I'll grow up lonely" Blackmail on your Mum. Do you not have any two legged friends?
Even a hamster needs a lot of looking after and if you don't look after it I guess your Mum would have to. So maybe if you act responsibly and help out with 'regular' chores your Mum could be swayed.
I would be willing to bet that not all your friends have pets or siblings! Funnily enough you would not be the first child to try this one on!

Talk to your mom at a time when she isn't rushed or busy. If she usually doesn't have a lot of uninterrupted time, see what you can do to help out - if you vacuum, do the dishes, take out the trash without being asked (if you don't already do these things!!) then that will also show her you are willing to take on responsibility. When you get the chance to talk to her properly, find out exactly what her reasons are - if it's allergies or maybe you are part of a basketball team that is away from home alot, then that's pretty valid. If she still says no then you will need to accept that, perhaps you can go afterschool to these friends you have and play with their pets and kid brothers/sisters :)

It does depend on how old you are, and if you have time to devote to your pet.
Hamsters are not always friendly, and might not be the best choice. There is more to consider than many people think, very often hamsters are kept on bedding and food that will kill them.
Try talking at a hamster forum and learn about what they really need to be happy

Just because they are small and cheap it does not mean that they are easily disposable and replaceable, they are pets that need appropriate care and even vet care.
Try looking at your local humane society or petfinder.com, many hamsters get surrendered when the kids no longer want to take care of them.. there are many out there that need good homes.

I is important for children to have some type of a pet to love and care for. Tell your Mom it teaches you responsibility and the dynamics of a close personal relationship filled with mutual love, respect and frienship. Your pet never judges you on your looks, how much money you have, your clothes or hair. You can tell him your most private fears and thoughts and know it will keep your secrets and still love you. Having this special confident will help you get your fellings out so you don't hold them in. It will make you a more well-adjusted adult in the long run. Good luck..

Sure l agree with you, we've got 4 hamsters, they are very easy to care for and don't require lots of attention like a dog, which l also have, l think it's good for kids to grow up with pets, it helps teach responsibility, but that's just my opinion.

having a pet it does not matter if you are an only child or not. if you feel like getting a hamster, go for it. but before you do, do researched on it to make sure this is the pet you would like. also you might want to get a parakee, a turtle, fish, hamster, mice, gerbil.
whatever you get, have fun. pets are great.

Well. a hampster is a nice pet and it is rather easy to take care of.. Maybe your mother knows best?? You know, with a pet, comes responsibility. I do not know if you go on trips a lot but if you do.. who takes care of the hampster when you are gone? That is one example of responsibility..

By the way.. I feel a pet in a household is essential but ONLY if there is a place for it and if one is willing to accept responsibility for it.
