It is rare that batteries overcharge to the point of damage anymore. This happened with older rechargeables (NiCd) without automatic settings which disengaged the charger. I doubt if your iPod could overcharge....and in any case, this would not ruin your device. If you have spare batteries, try installing these and see if there is a problem with the ones you have in there...which can sometimes happen.

I dont think so. Just let leave it alone for a while. When you put it to charge, was there any charge at all? Maybe it wasn't connected properly or the outlet was turned off.
