Very simple, you have to create some white space because the photo is resizing proportionately.
Depending on the software you are using, once you have resized your photo to 415x500, just increase the matting so that the 415 becomes 500 wihtout distorting your photo.
Or, if you don't mind cropping the photo, make the photo 602 X 500 and crop the long side down to 500 so that it is 500 x 500.
The third option is to resize and uncheck the proportionate resizing box, but that will distort your photo.

A lot of picture editing software has an option by default to maintain aspect ratio. Uncheck this and then try to give it the size you want. Remember doing this will make the picture a little off from focus or maybe pixelated.

If it has to be 500x500, make it 500x(something) and then crop the image. It is the aspect ratio that prevent you from resizing it like that.

when resizing, make sure that there is no ticked box saying "Lock Aspect Ratio" as this will stop you picking the exact size and distorting the image boundaries.

You are trying to stretch its width, but not its height, which will distort it, which is why it doesn't do it. Somewhere, your software should have a box to let you change the aspect ratio (width to height) and that will let you do it.
