Well, I have had both. The house I used to live in had an above ground, and the immediate expense wasn't as large as the inground I got put in when I moved to my new house. As far as enjoyment goes, the inground by far is much better. However, expense wise, the above ground is easier on the budget, though not greatly. It all depends on the size pool you get.

You can generally have a larger inground pool than above ground.
So the distance you can swim may be less with an above ground.
The new soft sided (large inflated pools) are dangerous.
Kids have drowned by climbing the sides and falling in (since the sides are not solid, kids can more easily access the water even when covered)
Some above ground pools have been emptied and stolen.
This recently happened in my area, while the family was away for the weekend.
Other than that, they are just fine. And better than no pool.
If I could afford one I'd love to have an above ground.

I have a 24 foot round 4 1/2 feet above ground pool for 5 yrs now....it has almost the same amount of water as an inground and seems bigger when you're in it because of it's shape, it was not only cheaper BUT our taxes didn't go up!!!
Above ground anyday!

In terms of money I'm really not sure. I'd say an in-ground would cost more based solely on the fact that you would have to excavate the hole for it to go into. Then you have to put down the support and the pool lining and then fill it with water.
But in-ground pools are easily heatable like if you live in a colder environment like the northeast. Usually people up here open their pools on Memorial Day weekend and close on Labor Day weekend but you could stretch that with an artificially heated pool. Or of course you could build an addition on to your house and have an indoor pool that you could use year-round.
But above ground pools you should use in abundant sunlight, a nice open yard is best and Virginia, Illonois, Nebraska, that whole line of the country should use those as they're as cold as more north.

Above ground is just as good, you can dig a hole that you can put the pool in so it's not totally above ground. You would still need to have space to walk around it and for the pump. And when you get the deck on and possibly even build a whole deck around it, it's just like an in ground pool. My cousin has had an above ground for about 5 years and they have kept it up and never had any problems with it. My friend had an in ground pool and she said she didn't want a pool anymore because it cost so much to keep it up. I would want an above ground because an in ground seems like too much trouble.

for the money above ground because in grounds cost so much. We had a house with in ground and then we had to move the new house didn't have pool so we put up an above ground no real difference they both serve the same purpose and one is a lot less expensive. And if you don't want a pool any more at lest with above ground you can sell it or give it away. in ground you have to pay to fill them in with dirt expensive again. Ann

well if you are trying to save money you might as well go for the above ground pool. Get an inground pool you will have to pay to get the ground dug for the pool to go in, then you have to pay for the insurance, then you have to pay for the pool, then you have to pay for the water and chemicals that go in the pool.
Getting an above ground pool you have to buy the pool, water, chemicals and I think that is all except for pool toys and floaties

Not sure about that, but if you have an inground pool, its likely you'll have to have a fence around it, by law. Where i live you have too. that might up the price. have a blessed day!

No because above-ground pools are generally smaller and there cannot be a diving board which is one of the most fun things about a pool.
