Most weddings nowadays aren't truly formal, so a suit is usually all that's required for men and a dress or suit for women.
If real formal dress is required, invitations will often specifiy "black tie" or "white tie."
Black tie is less formal than white tie, and is the standard tuxedo, with black jacket, black pants and, of course, black tie.
Black tie dress for women normally would allow the woman's choice of a formal gown or cocktail dress or evening separates.
White tie is much more strict: a single-breasted black jacket, white vest, white shirt, white tie, cufflinks and shirt studs. White tie is evening wear only.
White tie dress for women would be a formal gown.
If a very formal wedding were to be held in the daytime, the men would wear a morning suit, which consists of grey or black tailcoat ("cut-away coat") worn with grey trousers, vest and tie (or ascot). The women would wear formal suits or a dressy short dress.
