Well with insect bites, there is usually a purpose and reason for the swelling.
Mosquitoes in order to facilitate the feeding process will inject you with an anti-coagulant, this helps the blood flow easier without clotting. The saliva containing this chemical causes a slight allergic reaction in people, that is what causes the bump and itching that follows. People that are bitten regularly will eventually be "immune" to this allergic reaction and will not swell up or itch again.
All spiders are venomous. The bite is used as a defence in which they will inject you with this venom. Its natural use is to paralyze and begin pre-digestion of insects. When in the human blood stream it also begins to destroy tissues, this process is known as necrosis. This damage causes inflammation and swelling.

When we are bitten, certain materials are inserted into our system. Our immune system upon sensing that their are foreign materials in the body sends phagocytes and lymphocytes to combat this foreign materials. These antibodies then attack the foreign materials forming a swelling or pus like material in the area bitten. This swelling is actually a mixture of the anitbodies and the foreign materials.

Allergic reaction. I do not get bumps from mosquito bites, I am not allergic to whatever it is in their saliva that causes the bump. There for they bite but I do not get the itchy bump.

when misquito's take your blood, they also inject us with a fluid so it doesn't bleed out. that's why it bumps up, that's what is in there. same with spiders.

Your body rushes blood to the area to provide it with white cells to battle infections and red cells to clot and repair the wound.
