Can any tell me what specialty we should pick while traveling to Australia? I heard the silver jewelry, pearl necklace are really good. How about aborigine painting. Please tell me where we can pick from Sydney. Not very expensive? Urgent

Cant believe what iansand said! T-shirts, coffee mugs, jewellery and opals are always popular and reasonably inexpensive. There are markets near circular quay.

Get yourself some koori artwork, or a boomerang or something. The only thing to remember, is to do some research and buy it from a genuine dealer. That way the money will get to the aboriginal communities who actually made the work, and need the money. If you just pick it up in any old gift shop, it'll be a poor quality rip off made somewhere in China.

Otherwise, go to the supermarket, and get a jar of Vegemite. If you havent had it, you should try it, if you have had it, take it back for your friends to try. It's made out of yeast from beer vats & lots of salt, and it really is an aquired taste. Just put a very thin spread on buttered toast, and you might like it.

Go to the Craft markets, all the stuff is hand-made by the people who sell it.

I'm ashamed to say that most of the souvenirs you'll buy here are actually made in China. Please check the label carefully before you buy.

Be careful with Aboriginal paintings. Make sure they're originals and try to make sure that most of the money gets to the artist rather than the shop.

And good question too - most people just come here and buy a stuffed made-in-china kangaroo. Glad to see you're looking for something real.

You can find cheap souvenirs at Paddy's market (5 shot glasses for about the same amout) t shirts for 10 bucks and a hat for like 3. Aborginal paintings can be costly but a good investment, but to get it duty free you need to take it through the airport. I personally brought back a diddajadoo (totally spelled wrong) and I love looking at it. Boomerages are common too.

G'Day There,

If I were you, I'd consider buying some opals. Australia produces 90% of the worlds opals so you won't find many elsewhere.
They are an inexpensive gemstone and quite attractive. Paintings and the like are very difficult to transport without damaging them.

Cheers, M.

Boomerang , they make a nice souv in balsa ply, the originals are expensive, also didgeridoo copies, opal jewellery (beautiful and not too costly), aboriginal art, oz beachwear, beer coolers, croc leather curios, kangaroo pendants.

don't go to the 'made in australia' stores, they cost more

Hi there, if and when I ever go to Sydney, I plan on buying a boomerang (authentic). I also collect shot glasses of all the places that I go, small, and inexpensive, and a neat item to keep looking at. Have a lot of fun!

yeh a koori painting is great and you can get them anywhere in sydney (however 90% of them are made overseas and sold here and arent koori paintings at all).........opals are also everywhere and a significant part of oz, why not be traditional and just get a stuffed kangaroo toy or a toy croc.......
