Use a product such as Febreeze first on the insole.

Take the laces out.

Definitely put them in with some towels - the trainers will clunk around and you need something soft like a towelling robe or towels to break the blow.

Dry the trainers upside down with the tongues hanging out (don't put in a tumble dryer else the plastic will melt).

Are those shoes?

They're washable if they have synthetic leather -- this is what most athletic shoes are made out of nowadays. If they're leather, they might shrink, but don't take my word for it. I would wash it on normal, or delicate if you want to be delicate on them. I can't stress the leather/synthetic leather thing enough. If they're all synthetic leather your shoes should come out looking great. If it's the smell you're mainly after, start the washer, let it go through about half of the wash cycle, then stop it, and let the shoes sit in it for a long time (a few hours, or overnight) then start it up again, and let it go through the rest of the cycle, and continue, to rinse and spin. Leave your shoes sitting out all day or overnight to dry.

I would wash them at a 40 wash or a delicate 30.

No hotter than 40, one half of a wash tablet only otherwise you're likely to get a foam flood; you can get a special net bag with cushion strips to stop banging and drum unbalance - Betterware sell one probably available in pound shops or similar.

You should never wash them in the washing machine as this destroys any support in the soles. I put mine upside down in the top tray of my dishwasher and use the mid length cycle. YOU MUST REMEMBER NOT TO LEAVE THEM IN FOR THE DRYING BIT THOUGH - this will melt them.

Delicate of course, but if they have a suede or faux [fake]-suede you need to get some deodorizer for the inside and forgo the machine washing because it could fade the color on that suede look.

Funnily enough I was thinking the same thing this morning, my white Dunlops are looking a little grey.

I'm going to put them on a wool wash then hang them up to dry. Fingers crossed.
