It seems that we tend to view freedom as being without ties or without responsibility, where no one has any claim on who we are or what we do. In short, freedom gets pigeon-holed as American/Western individualism I think.

Freedom to me is being able to go where I want to when I want according to the laws laid down by our government. I am able to practice any religion without fear of prosecution. I can learn a trade by my own decision. I have a choice in my way I want to live my life according to the laws that govern my country. I can voice my opinion and not live in fear because of it. I have choices in my life I'm not made to do anything I don't want to do. As long as I follow the laws that govern my country I can live a free life. If I make a bad choice then its my responsibility to be punished by the laws that govern my country.. No one is actually''free'' everyone has to answer to someone but in my country(USA) I can at least have that choice to abide by our laws or not to and face the consequences of my actions.I've lived abroad and seen how others live I love my country, we have issues but at least we are able to have that choice to have our issues and not be made to live a certain way and not have a chance to dream and make our dreams a reality. Where ever you go people will always take freedom for granted until their freedom is threatened, until that happens people will remain thinking the way they do. That's my view on this question

Great, thought-provoking question!

Maybe "freedom" is the ability to do what you want when you want to do it. So for example, deciding to become a mother at say, 32, would be a great freedom, even though that takes work and responsibility. Or the freedom to return to school, which also takes work and responsibility.

Maybe the 2 are not mutually exclusive.

With freedom comes great responsibility, but here in America we pass laws and hire lawyers to protect us from the responsibility for our actions.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose!

Sorry I couldn't help my self . In answer to your question freedom is an excuse to be rude and greedy. It gives you the right not to care about anyone else.
