If you've been stressed out at all, you could've done what I did. I dislocated my jaw in my sleep. I grind my teeth & apparantly the weight of your head when sleeping, pushes your jaw to the side (when your on your stomach or side) so you grind , get swelling, and then your jaw pops out of place. I went to my dentist because the pain got so bad over a week's time that I couldn't even talk. She prescribed 5 days of valuim at night sleeping, 10 days of 2 times daily ibuprofen, and start sleeping on my back because now that I had done it, It will happen again. It has twice, but the ibuprofen helps.

It might be that the cartilage that cushions the temporal mandibular joint slipped out of place causing the bones to rub to together. If it keeps bothering you, go see your doctor.

Are you taking a lot of calcium? Sometimes if you take overdo it with calcium supplements you can get hypercalcemia and that tightens your jaw. This goes away in a few days if you stp taking too much calcium.

Grinding your teeth or having a tense jaw. If you were tense the whole night it would make you sore the next morning.

More than likely clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth while you're sleeping.
