If it's a 'smooth' dent where the metal has just been popped in a it, you might be able to pull it out with a suction cup gadget and leave no damage, or pop it back out from the other side.
If there is a sharper type edge on the dent, it needs much more work. If you can get at the back of the panel by taking off the interior of the door, you can hammer it out with a rubber hammer, and using curved body anvils, you can straighten the metal out, then it's a body filling, sanding, priming and paint job. Even an amateur CAN do it if they have the patience to do it correctly.

If it's a small dent, put dry ice on it. This will cause to metal to shrink and the dent to pop out.
Don't touch the ice with your hand.

Either take a small rubber hammer and reach behing the door, under all of the plastic and crap, and gently tap untill it pops out, or get a new door. You can find them in junkyards, and they only cost like $20!
