What is the purpose of requiring nurses and doctors to wear special garments? Most of them wear it all day long. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, sports club, stolling in the city, smoking. Is it because they are easy to clean? Is it a rule?

A few reasons actually

1. Scrubs make us identifable with-in our own hospital to other staff. If there is an emergency, and a doctor is needed right away, its easy to call out to the man in the white coat. Alot of places use colors as markers, such as, RN's wear blue scrubs, LPN's wear purple, RT's wear green, CNA's wear white, Lab Tech's wear red, and so on.

2. When you have to wear something for a 12 hour shift, and more than likely 13 or 14 hours of work, it best be comfortable, as in scrubs

3. Most of the time, a central purchasing agent buys them, and to cut costs, they go with simple.

4. Would you rather get blood on your brand new American Eagle button up shirt, or a 5 dollar scrub top?

5. Its a tradition thing, medical staff has always worn them, why stop now.

Actually...the only docs I see wearing 'special garments' are surgeons wearing scrubs. The rest of the docs will dress business casual or in a suit while rounding in the hospital, often donning a white coat - so that they may be distinguished from everyone else within the hospital. All other medical staff (nurses, nurse aids, radiology, etc.) pretty much wear scrubs. I think that nurses should go back to the traditional nursing uniforms so that they may be distinguishable from the rest of the hospital staff. I think scrubs are worn because they are easy to move around in for the most part.

Part of the reason is hygienic. You can change several times during the day if scrubs get soiled. Wearing a white coat over scrubs while remaining within the hospital is usually considered adequate between surgical cases, since when entering an operative field an additional sterile gown is carefully placed over the scrubs for each separate case.

Part is "speed" since you can go from clinic to OR attire in a very short time if necessary.

Another part is being able to identify roles quickly in emergencies when everyone is wearing masks. This becomes important in teaching hospitals where there are people at different levels of training.

It's so the patients can identify them easily. If I'm a patient in a hospital, I want to know that the person injecting something into my IV is a nurse or a doctor, not housekeeping. :)

More sanitary, a uniform sevice does the cleaning, identified as med staff, personal clothes kept clean.
They may change during the day several times.

When my mother worked at a hospital, she was required to bring her "scrubs" to work and change there...she did wear them all shift however, but was not supposed to leave the hospital in them w/o changing...she'd then wear them home, wash them, and carry them back to work to wear again...
