I too put alittle fabric softener in my water, little bit goes along way as it is concentrated. Not only does it smell wonderful but it helps to cut down on the residue of soap left in your carpet ( personally, I can never get out all the soap) and makes your carpet soft and not sticky from soap residue. I totally agree with above poster.

To clean more thoroughly, you can use baking soda in the water to help eliminate order and then after the carpet has dried, you can spray an odor absorbing spray...like Febreze (I don't know if you have it in Australia, we do in the US). Most carpet cleaner manufacturers will have a product to make carpets smell nicer.
