u need nothing special, just a decent modern machine
if u can afford $ 1200 - 1300
i'd suggest the dell xps m 1210
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1210?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
a cute little dynamite
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=M1210S1&s=dhs
at around $ 700
i'd suggest the dell inspirion e1405
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/entnb_e1405?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
the lowest configuration is good enuf
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=E1405S1&s=dhs
now, lemme tell u why i chose dell
this is the best site for configuring, sortta ala-carte menu
just go through specs or rather features and come back with some more inputs & we can refine what EXACT suits u best

good 2 hear u'r feedback
> both have 4 usb 2.0 ports
>both have wi-fi built in
& besides 1 firewire port too (IEEE 1394 integrated port)
>> much faster than usb 2.0
xps m 1210 weighs 4.4 lbs
inspirion e1405 weighs 5.5 lbs
guess both have an inkjet printer bundled in
>> best part is operating system for both is win xp media centre 2005, great for snaps, music, dvd flicks ... without booting up the laptop/windows ... notice external consoles
zoom in now
price, weight/dimensions ...
the xps is a premium range notebook, far outperforms the inspirion

My sister recently started medical college at OSU they set her up with an IBM thinkpad X41 tablet. It extremely small and light and she likes the fact that she can write on her class notes. It has incredibley good battery life. The smaller you go in laptops though the slower they get. The hardrive has only 1 disk inside compared to the 3-5 found in desktops. This slows down boot time. But once it boots it works really nice.

I've never been to medical school but I'm assuming you will primarily be doing MS office stuff and web browsing. You can check out different computer specifications at http://www.comprec.com and shop around for best prices with those.

I suggest you go for HP / COMPAQ laptop with facilities for CD / DVD play and write with a nice HDD, and good speed.
Please..... for God's sake avoid DELL / SONY till further info from the market. Presently DELL / SONY are in deep S***.
Good luck

Go with a Dell or a HP, as those are some of the most portable. I have a Compaq Presario, but it's widescreen so it may not be as portable.

Dell may be a poor choice.
I have an HP zv6130us but you may think it a little heavy.
It has a nice display - I watch movies on it. If you go to the hp website they have lots of FAQ.

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m. It weighs 4 lbs and I take it with me everywhere. It's a fantastic little computer.
