Well, as a secretary, I do know that if you want to be viewed as competent by your superiors, spelling and grammar are skills that should be mastered.

If you're a secretary - your in trouble - right along with your spelling and grammar. Those are the first skills you MUST master.
Go beyond what is expected of you. Always take on the extra task - but NOT until YOUR work is finished - properly. NEVER let him see you goofing off.
Ask other people you work with to help you understand their jobs. This might be tricky - so make it clear you don't WANT their job, you just want to know what they do so you can better understand the whole company.
After YOUR work is finished - go watch the cashier. Watch what she does and how she does it. Again, make it clear no one asked you to do this - you're just trying to understand the company better.
Rule of thumb - dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Always be neat, well made up with your hair done properly. No jeans, no pants other than dress slacks/suits, skirts with jackets are preferred, always wear stockings and decent shoes.
You MUST work on your spelling and grammar.

hello agbomo,
Think like a business person. As an employee you have something to offer, your services are your business, your boss is your customer, what can you do so your superior continue doing business with you? give an excellent customer service, if you as a business treat the customers better than the competency is obvious that you will thrive! Know the routine of your customer, likes and dislikes, and anticipate its needs, in other words stay up to date with everything and always with a positive attitude. And remember to expand your business, meaning give good customer service to everybody not just your boss. Also attend classes that will benefit you and your performance at work, good luck!

Is English your first language? if it is, you're in serious trouble because of your spelling and grammar. If it's not, you still have a lot of work to do, since being a secretary does involve some writing. You might be asked on occasion to draft letters for your boss, and if they're riddled with mistakes you will most certainly appear to be incompetent.
