I m sorry to tell that you cannot register gmail as like yahoo or hotmail. Registration can be done only with invitation from a gmail user who has invitations left in his account.

you need to have a cell phone with text messaging, go to gmail, and click on the create new account by sending invitation code to cell....give them your # they will send you an invitation code, then use the invitation code and follow the directions....simple huh or if that doesn't help send me an e-mail at [e-mail] and i'll see if i can figure out how to send an invite

It is simple. Open the page of gmail.com. Register your self, as with other accounts. After you get a gmail account, you can join orkut.
