I don't have a modem in my computer and my brother gave me an old us robotics external modem and I downloaded the driver from us robotics (the .inf files) and I pluged everything and I made it my default modem but It still doesn't work the modem is on but I cant hear it dialing and when I dial in the computer It say it didn't recognize it.

Probably because the modem is too old for the operating system to recognize properly. That's the biggest pitfall of computers these days; once something is more than 5 years old or so, it becomes obsolete.

you wont necessarily hear an external modem dialing anyway. be sure you have the phone cords plugged into the correct rj11 ports or it wont work properly, try testing it with hyperterminal by calling your cell or a phone close by. these things are cheap enough now, spend the $15 dollars for a good internal one.

First check your bios to make sure your have at least one serial port activated. A lot of time these get deactivated if they are not being used to save resources for something else. Once you connect it to your computer and turn it on it should show "new hardware found", then you can load (or reload) the drivers.
