This is usually not done anymore. The cost was high and the companies doing it rarely got the cars to meet U.S. emissions standards on the first try. Sometimes they never got them to pass. Then you are stuck with a vehicle that you have a lot of money invested in that you can not drive.
You would be better off selling the car and purchasing an American spec car after you get here.

well, just beat on it for a while, when its all creaky and half broken down, that should be just about right.
