I have been there. I went in 1994, but I didn't stay nearby. My hotel was up by the Tatra Mountains.
Be prepared to be very moved if you visit the camp. It is a very powerful place and can be very upsetting too. But do make the visit, it is worth it.

Stay in Krakow its a lovely city and you can get the bus straight to Auschwitz from there
