Yes!
Certainly I think you can tell SOMETHING about them.
On lots of different levels - their energy, their style, and perhaps even the cast oftheir features - their physiology, or Fizzog, as we used to call it in college.
Just from the face, I think its possible to tell mood, and something or the personality. When you can see the whole person in the flesh, and hear their voice, that is even more revealing.
However, first impressions can be misleading - and so we can be open to surprises!
From the avatar - yes, I think you can tell some things! Certainly basic colouring for example. Not having a picture at all reveals - shyness or lazyness...depending on the person. And a certain amount of paranoia, because identifying someone on YA is virtually impossible with an avatar!
Of course you can't always tell the age of an avatar....because they don't come with wrinkles, which is great!

Yes!! There's a great book called "BLINK" the power of thinking without thinking by Malcolm Gladwell that will tell you a lot about first impressions, how we formulate them and why they can be wrong sometimes with some great real life accounts. For example the first chapter tells the story of a Kouros statue that was thought to be fake by some but real by others - the truth was discovered just before a US museum paid a huge amount of money for it.....it's really an intriguing book. He would have a lot to say about the two guys that were voted off the Monarch flight at the weekend.

Nope. If a person looked at me, they'd tend to think I was some kind of freak, with all my piercings and body art and wearing black all the time, and covered in chains, just waiting to beat up on some 90 lb. weakling.
Yet, if they get to know me, they'd see that I was gentle, caring, and self-sacrificing. They would know that, despite the outside, I am a devout Christian on the inside. They would learn that everything about me has a special meaning, a reason for the tattoos, a reason for the piercings, a reason for the chains... and it's all Biblical (The black is simply 'cuz it looks good on me. ^_~).
And even though my avatar looks a little like me... it does not portray who I am in real life in the slightest.

No, its an unfair assumption that, believe me I have thought in the past that I could just judge a person by one look at them and ended up with egg on my face for been so thoughtless, I was very young and very foolish at that time and thought I knew it all, a lot of people who appear standoffish are really just very shy, a lot of people who are mouthy are lonely and people who are cocky are insecure, the best thing to do is to get to know a person before passing judgement of them.

By the avatars, no. But if I'm physically in someone's presence, there's a pretty good chance I can. I'm quite an empath.

yes...if you are looking at a person in real life (not photos)...most probably you will be able to judge how he/she behaves and what's his/her personality will be to a certain extend.... but by looking at the avatars...you won't be able to tell what they like...especially their avatars are just some cartoons....

No because I am gorgeous on the outside but a complete b***h!
Avatars are how people perceive themselves...I've never seen a fat one!

Nope. That would be judging a book by it's cover. I do however get a "vibe" or a feeling about someone sometimes. That's my instinct and intuition talking so I listen to that and it usually turns out to be right.
