"Reason" and terrorism is an oxymoron.
Al Qaeda believed that by attacking America at home, it could force the removal of the US forces from Saudi Arabia (considered holy ground to them), and a reversal of US policy of supporting Israel. US responses to previous Muslim terrorism made them believe we would in effect, "cut and run". We left Lebanon after they bombed the marines, we did nothing after they blew up a Navy ship in Yemen, and had no response to the barracks bombing in Saudi Arabia.
They grossly misjudged what the response to 9/11 would be.

US to get oil - what better reason than to go into Iraq on that account. In this generation - the one who controls oil, controls the world. Until someone finds a cheap alternative, that is.
