DUH. It is visible when you click on it, but why did it get deleted from the SEARCH results?

It's kind of hard to figure Google out at times. For the longest time my web site www.violinstudent.com was not in the top 500 sites when you searched for "violin student" on Google. But I was on the first page for MSN and Yahoo!

And at least for me Google has not been very forthcoming with what it takes to be ranked well. They say that the key is quality content and lots of high quality inbound links. As I recall they will not address any questions regarding an individual site. They provide generic pages and say that the process is completely automated so that there is actually no human intervention in the ranking process.

I write my own content, so it is original which is supposed to be good. I have a growing number of people who link to my site, which is also supposed to be good. The number of pages grows day by day, which is also supposed to be good. And yet my page rank has dropped from 4 to 3, which is deadly!

And I haven't figured out what to do to get Google to see the number of web sites linking to mine. They say that they will pick up the web sites as they crawl the web, and then these pages will be indexed, and they will show up. Well, as the number of sites that link to my own grow, the number of sites that Google lists as linking to mine drops. That is extremely frustrating.

At times when I have suddenly dropped off Google's radar it has usually been at times when they are tweaking their ranking algorithm. Sometimes that bumps me around for anywhere from a day to a week.

What I am trying to do is promote the site via article writing. I continue to put quality content up. I watch for the opportunity to write something of value on message boards. And I look for quality sites that might be interested in sites like mine and ask them to link to me.

I also applied to be listed in the Open Directory Project. I personally have been completely unsuccessful in having them list my site. They, like Google, will not tell you how they make decisions nor will they respond to questions regarding individual web sites. In their case, however, I do know that they have editors that make decisions about the sites. They say that they want to put together valuable resources for the Internet, but I see numerous sites listed that, at least to my mind, provide far less service but manage to get listed in the directory. So that part is also a mystery to me.

I have found the newsletter at entireweb.com useful. I've also used a couple SEO programs, but still find that the big guys with the big budgets tend to move to the top of the lists a whole lot easier than the little guy with not much of a budget.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but that's been my experience. Hang in there! Keep on fiddlin'! And smile through the confusion!
