The Islamic month of Ramadaan starts on 24th September this year and will end around the 24th of October so you might want to bear that in mind (this sometimes affects business hours in muslim countries).
A day trip to Alexandria : Greco-Roman museum, Danial mosque (brother of one of the Muslim prophets), Fort Quaitby, Roman amphitheatre, Amud el sawari (Pompei's Pillar) and then the catacombs. Have lunch then go on the English tour at the Alexandrina Bibliotheca and end off with a trip to Montazah Palace Gardens .
Can't remember how much this cost us (i went with 3 other friends). The name of our tour guide was Emad and you can email him at emad_caribou@yahoo.com (give him dates, number of people and tell him you're looking for something that isn't too fancy - he'll work out something to your budget specs and he's very reasonable). He doesn't check his email that regularly so send him a text message to tell him to check his email, his cellphone number is +20103455060.

Join the International Youth Hostel Association.
Do a search under " youth hostel". The one in Cairo and Alexandria are great. You will hook up with other travelers that have just come from many different places including Alexandria. That would be your best source for travel planning, even if it is last minute, it will be well worth it. I traveled all over Europe, Africa and latin America using them. It's fun, you meet great people and it's cheap.
You should at least check it out.

Some monuments and nice places for you to check out or ask about in your Tour ;)
-Alexandria's Library
-Caslte of Kait'baie
-Engineering Faculty "Wonderful pharaonic theme buildings + gardens etc...)
-Stanly Bridge (recommend you to see it at night, beautiful nights)
Weather might turn a little cold and windy so take your coats just in case :)

Thomas Cook is a very good company in Egypt. They also have a bank with good exchange rates. The rate will be about $100 or so US Dollars. It is a long day trip but very nice!
