Well, there are a lot of sweet and sugary definitions out there, and annoyingly, they are all quite true! You are someones friend when you surprise them by knowing them for what they are, and despite that still like them... when you care enough to tell someone that what he is doing is wrong, even though what he is doing is popular... when you enjoy someones company, for nothing more than the sheer pleasure of being with that person... you're being someones friend when you step in to help even though he is too proud to ask for it...

someone that is there through thick and thin! I found out who my real friends were 3 years ago when my mum sadly passed away! I thought i had a lot of mates, but it turns out i have lots of acquaintance's and 3 best friends!

My shortest definition is "someone that you can ring up at 2am, tell them you´ve got a real problem, & they rush to help you". Most people don´t have many friends like that & they are invaluable.
