since there seem to be more people answering this that dont know, heres how:

you set the network card to listen to (but not respond to) ay traffic destined to the internet and to the other computer. you now have all the data sent between the other computer and the chat room you want to spy on

If they really wanted to then yes but, no without installing some extra software, use the secure option if the chat room has one so thge data is encrypted.
