Because of an extremely cold world climate (much colder than today) much water was stored at the two poles and in glaciers and the level of the oceans was about 70 meters lower.
What we now know as the Bering Street between the Asian and North-American continents was then a dry land bridge. Over this "bridge" humans migrated from Asia to America and became the American Indian ancestors.

1,000,000 years ago the earth's ocean was a vast body of ice because the earth was going through a phase known as the ice age...when oxygen and hydrogen molecules started to react they formed clouds which when were filled formed rain that cause something known as the longest period of rain which lasted for thousands of years, other molecules were also reacting in the atmosphere like carbon and oxygen C + ( O + O ) = CO2 carbon dioxide. this excess carbon dioxide started to effect the greenhouse gases hence the green house effect started to take place. This is basically when the gases in the earth's atmosphere begins to heat the earth etc. causing the seas and ocean's to melt......
the earth ocean has increasingly risen, this is proven in the "bedford level" experiment which was done many years ago in this experiment a pole was placed a litttle distance out in the ocean today the pole is completely covered in water. We also kno wthe oceans are rising because of the use of CFC chloroflourocarbons which are found in aresol sprays etc. this breaks down the ozone layer causing the suns direct rays to hit the earth. thi swill result in over heating of th eearth, skin cancer and people may even burn to death. over heating of the earth will cause the polar ice caps to melt, which will cause an inbalance of salt water and fresh water in the ocean, so fishes and salt water animals may die or be forced to change habitats etc.and the rising of water levels. All these are signs of rising water levels which we are already experiencing .....

During the most recent ice age (at its maximum about 20,000 years ago) the world's sea level was about 130 m lower than today, due to the large amount of sea water that had evaporated and been deposited as snow and ice in northern hemisphere glaciers. The majority of the glaciers had melted by about 10,000 years ago, but minor glacial melting has continued (with occasional reversals) throughout recorded human history.

Loads of variances, especially with the last Ice Age.

I don't know what it was 1,000,000 years ago, but if you would like to measure now take you a little dip and see.

I don't think geology was an exact science 1,000,000 years ago. I doubt there was anyone taking measurements.

I don't know how you would measure that because the position of the land has been changing also.
