Whatever happened to just simply advertising a product? Like hello...this is what we are selling, this is what our product does, please try it. Where did all this flashy, "in your face" advertising come from and why must people seem ignorant and clueless in TV adds???

I agree with you 100%. Ads today have to feature someone who is an idiot (because he doesn't use the product) and then their intelligent friend or relative who shares the wonderful news about some new thing that makes life so much better. What I have noticed is that more and more you will notice that it is often a man who is the "idiot" and a woman who is the "enlightened one" showing him the way or something close to it. Like the ad for Coke, I think, where the 3 guys are standing there watching the 3 construction workers, (all guys) and making comments about how one person does the work while everyone else stands around. Then you see a professional woman diligently working away and she says "I've done it" and then all the guys take credit for it. Ads like this are constant, and while I appreciate humor in ads, I also like balance. Of course, Everybody Loves Raymond showed us how popular it is to have an idiot man and an intelligent woman together on TV. I guess that is just TV today.

People like to be entertained and the media/advertising agencies are not unaware of this. So what they do is create characters on TV to entertain us in order to sell there products. However, that is not all - another reason they use simpletons to advertise products is that they are saying to us - if this idiot can figure out this is a good product to by - it should be obvious to you - the consumer - that this would be a great product to buy. Advertisers are always trying to keep our attention and at the same time apealing to our ego's to get us to buy their products. Advertising is a great way to understand how people try to use human psychology to manipulate us into buy things.

Because, in the end, a vast majority of Americans ARE stupid, ignorant sheep. They make commercials like that because they WORK. No other reason. If you picked up on that, then you must have a higher than average IQ. Mine is 145, but the American average is 99.
The sad part is that Americans are getting stupider too. Test scores are falling nationwide and high school dropout rates are at an all time high. It is SO BAD that schools are actually making tests easier in order to pass more people.

They media portray people as stupid and clueless because that's the way more than half of the American population is.
