is it just me, or does the fact that there is a punk style of dress defeat the purpose of being punk? if you're such a non-conformist, then why would you conform to a style of dress

punk is a mindset, not a style.
you are right, punk as a style defeats the purpose of punk as a mindset.
Having a mohawk doesnt make you a punk. Dressing in a 3 peice suit when everyone else has mohawks would make you more punk than having a mohawk.
Punk is being you, regardless of the consequences.

Yep. You're right.
The style choices made by the original punk rockers were made in order to shock the public, and be different. Now though, "punks" dress up in uniforms purchased from Hot Topic or some similar overly produced "punk" apparel store in order to try and prove to the world how "punk rock" they are, despite the fact that all they need for one of those uniforms is access to their parent's credit card. "Punks" today have given up shocking and being different for fitting in to the stereotypes, and the DIY ethic for Hot Topic. It kinda pisses me off, because it's so color between the lines, and that's not what punk is about.

you probable received't locate many "punk" clothing at those shops. attempt different shops, yet even if you could continually locate surprising tank tops and garments for you to layer and positioned on which includes your "punk" clothing. (via ways - Kohl's has a line of clothing made via Avril lavigne talked about as abbey first light in case you favor to seem it up) solid success and satisfied procuring! =)

I think that its interesting that there are many people who are "punks" or other people similar like tattooed colored hair leather clad people who say, "I'm unique man! I'm not the norm!" But there are so many people who look exactly like them too.
