MOST IMPORTANT TO KNOW - when the air bag light is flashing, the air bag system has been made inoperative by the computer that controls it and it will not function if the vehicle is involved in a collission.
When dealing with air bags, do not have anyone other than the dealer check it out. The safety systems are not to be guessed at. An air bag has sufficient charge to injure or kill someone if it is mishandled. Even when disconnected from the car an air bag still has the capability of going off as it can be triggered by even a static spark. The only way to diagnose your car's air bag is with the Ford scan tool.
Question: Do you have an extended warranty? Have you called thedealer and asked them if there is still warranty on the air bag system? Bylaw there are warranties on vehicle body and other specified components, though I cannot recal whether there is on air bags or not.
If you have no warranty, you should still have it checked as soon as possible. When thinking about this diagnosis and repair, consider that you are investing that expense directly in your own safety and possibly the safety of others. The diagnostic time is usually quite reasonable for advanced electronics. Call you service dept. and ask them how much time it will take to diagnonse - they have a labour manual that they use to estimate the time required for booking appointments and scheduling their technicians. Also ask how much they charge per hour to for diagnostics.

The airbag light is flashing because it detected a problem with the system and has turned it off.. as the other two mechanics said, it's not something for the DIY cause one false move and airbag goes boom (and with the cost of a bag going for about $800 truthfully on a 92 if you can find one) you can basically total a car if you blow the bag accidently.

Usually on those cars, the "clockspring" or what connects the air bag to the rest of the car got an open in it. But as I said, if you don't know what you are doing professionally don't mess with it...

And as carnut said, bring to a Ford dealer who has the special tools to diagnose the system without blowing up a airbag trying to figure out what's wrong

Air bag system has several codes that store in the air bag control unit. See Ford dealership because those codes are not available to generic scan tools. No simple way out

A light flashing usually means a loose connection or bad wire, although you should always have it checked out when it comes to airbags.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX OR DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM YOURSELF. TAKE IT DIRECTLY TO YOUR DEALER........... NOT A REPAIR SHOP................YOUR DEALER!!! I am not yelling at you my friend. just putting emphasis on the urgency that you need to take it to your dealer. They are the only ones that can find the problem and correct it. It could be something as simple as a sensor or a loose wire but please do not attempt to do it yourself, doing so can cause it to deploy, then it would cost you about $3000 just to have another bag put in your steering wheel plus the cost to find your original problem. PLEASE, take it to your dealer immediately. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ANY ADVICE FROM ANYONE ELSE ON THIS QUESTION.

Most likely it is the clock spring in the steering column, but you will have to get the computer scanned to find out!!
