If you're looking for a nice park in close proximity to Dallas, go to Fiesta Texas in San Antonio.
Their coasters are:
*Road Runner Express (mid-size steel coaster, ~45mph)
*Rattler (wooden coaster)
*Superman Krypton Coaster aka SKC (steel floorless, rated 33rd best steel on the planet; AWESOME ride)
*Poltergeist (steel, "spaghetti bowl" formation)
They also have Scream, a triple tower free-fall ride.
There are several "flat" rides, the most popular being Frisbee. It's a bit difficult to describe, so check out the site I'll include below for photos and information.
The water park is White Water Bay, and they have some fantastic slides. However, it will be closed for the season after Labor Day.
But, the main park also has Gully Washer (river rapids), Bugs Bunny's White Water Rapids (log flume), and Power Surge (chute-the-chutes).
There are a nice selection of kiddie rides scattered throughout the park, the best shows in the country (they've received Amusement Today's Golden Ticket Award 7 years running for the shows), and the park is nestled within the cliffs of a former limestone quarry.
They're getting a new ride next year as well, and information coming down the pipeline says it will be a "spinning coaster" such as the Wild Mouse. Check out the Gerstlauer website for their models, as this is the company from which the ride will come [we hear :-) ].
I love the atmosphere of this park, and it is my favorite.
I've also been to Six Flags Magic Mountain and Six Flags St. Louis. Of the two, I liked St. Louis better, from the atmosphere standpoint. It was a very nice park.
I've not been to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, but have heard it is THE park to go to for record-breaking coasters.
Whichever you choose, you should have a great time. Enjoy!

We are from California but were visiting family in Kentucky this weekend and we went to the Kentucky State Fair. It involves Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom and we were able to go there as part of the fair and it was awesome! We are roller coaster finatics and to be able to visit a Six Flags park and have it not be as crowded and the rides be oh so more reasonable (unlimited for $20)...I thought it was great!

I grew up in Dallas and, like you, I consider Six Flags over Texas to be my "home" park. There are many Six Flags parks around the country, and most of them compare pretty favorably to ours. In fact, Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio is a really nice park. You should visit it if you ever make it down there.
The Disney parks are pretty darn good also. I prefer them to Six Flags, but they aren't as convenient so I don't go as often.
